Empowering the Future: Kamariah’s Journey at Black Femme Legal

For Kamariah, volunteering with Black Femme Legal was more than an introduction to the legal field—it was a transformative journey blending skill-building, personal growth, and meaningful community engagement.

As a volunteer with the LAWS Summer Job Program, Kamariah took on diverse responsibilities that not only expanded her professional horizons but also allowed her to contribute to impactful initiatives.

“Working at Black Femme Legal was an empowering experience. I gained insights into the legal field, improved my research and writing skills, and connected with professionals who have inspired my career aspirations,” Kamariah shares.

A highlight of Kamariah’s work was developing a youth toolkit—a comprehensive resource aimed at equipping young people with practical tools to navigate their daily lives and career paths. Featuring educational guides, development activities, and information on critical topics like health, education, employment, and legal issues, the toolkit also connects youth to essential social services.

“The goal of the toolkit is to equip youth with the knowledge and skills they need to become successful, healthy members of society,” Kamariah explains.

Through this project, Kamariah not only gained a deeper appreciation for the intersection of law and social services but also sharpened her research, writing, and collaborative skills. She embraced the challenge of creating accessible, impactful resources for young people, reflecting Black Femme Legal’s mission to uplift and empower marginalized communities.

Beyond the toolkit, Kamariah found her time at Black Femme Legal to be professionally enriching. Interacting with legal experts and community leaders offered invaluable mentorship and clarity about her career aspirations.

“Understanding legal obligations and privileges was particularly empowering—it’s knowledge that applies to so many facets of life,” she reflects. “This experience has given me the tools and confidence to pursue my goals.”

Kamariah’s journey is a testament to the impact of youth programs like LAWS (Law in Action Within Schools), which connect young people to real-world experiences and meaningful growth opportunities.
